TOOL #11

The Power I for Teasing

Use the Power I for Teasing when you want to tell someone that you don’t like his or her teasing.

Remember the blue jay tool called the Power I? It can be a hummingbird tool, too. The first thing you should do if you are teased is use a Power I to tell the person to stop: “Please stop that,” or, “Quit it!” Often, the teaser was just trying to have fun and didn’t know the teasing was hurting you. If that’s the case, asking the person to stop will usually do the trick. If it doesn’t, you can use a stronger Power I: “I asked you to stop and I want you to cut it out now!” You can also use a strong question, like, “Why are you doing that after I asked you to stop?”

Remember, your body language and tone of voice when using the Power I are important. Stand tall, look the person in the eye, and don’t move away. Speak in a clear and steady voice. Don’t act threatening or mean, but do be honest and direct. Just walk away when you’re finished.
